Women's Basketball Captures First Conference Win Against Claflin

SALISBURY – The Blue Bears and the Panthers kept it close for the majority of Saturday afternoon's game in New Trent Gym. 

The Livingstone Women's Basketball team defeated Claflin University, 60-55. 

The Blue Bears improve to (5-11,1-6) and The Panthers drop to (9-5,3-3). 

Sha'Terra Ferrell led the Blue Bears with 18 points shooting 8-10. Andresia Alexander followed with 14 points shooting 3-6. 

The Panthers Nya Morris led with 13 points. Janelle Sample followed with 12 points.   

Livingstone shot 39.3% from the field (22-56) and 76.5% from the free-throw line (13-17).

The Blue Bears return to action Wednesday, January 18 when they travel to Fayetteville State University. The first tip is set for 5:30 p.m. ET. 

The Blue Bears took a five-point lead at the five-minute mark with a jumper in the paint by Andresia Alexander, 8-3. The Panthers tied it up at 8-8 at the two-minute mark with a three-pointer by Nya Morris. Janelle Sample got the last basket of the first quarter for the Panthers to tie it up 12-12.

The Blue Bears went back up by four with 6:44 left in the second quarter, 18-14. The Panthers took the lead at the three-minute mark with a three-pointer by Janelle Sample, 19-18. Thalia Carter gave the Blue Bears another four-point lead with 1:49 to go with a three-pointer from the corner, 23-19. Morgan Kelson completed a layup right before the half to cut the Blue Bears' lead to one at Halftime, 24-23.

The Blue Bears came out in the third quarter continuing to add to their lead. A jumper by Sha'Terra Ferrell gave the Blue Bears a six-point lead with 3:50 left in the third quarter. Sha'Terra Ferrell completed a three the old fashion way at the end of the third quarter to put the Blue Bears up by four, 42-38.

The Blue Bears took a ten-point lead at the three-minute mark with another layup by Sha'Terra Ferrell, 54-44. The Panthers got within three with :05 left to go in the quarter, 58-55. A foul by Nya Morris sent Andresia Alexander to the line for two, extending the Blue Bears' lead, to 60-55. 

The Blue Bears had 27 bench points versus the Panthers' 20.

Livingstone and Claflin both had 28 bench points.
